The Causes of and Treatments for Teeth Grinding and Clenching

November 9, 2015

woman with headache from teeth grindingA 2005 survey conducted by the Children’s Hospital Boston Dental Clinic collected data on childhood bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) from nearly 900 families. 38% of these families reported having children that engaged in night-time teeth grinding and clenching. Children whose parents brux were 1.8% more likely to engage in night-time bruxism. A 2013 study revealed that 5% of the population reported experiencing night-time bruxism, and 10% reported diurnal (day time) teeth clenching and grinding. However, day time bruxism may simply be more easily diagnosed than night time bruxism rather than more common. Bruxism is a fairly common problem with numerous causes, and appropriate treatments are almost as varied as these causes. It’s essential for patients who brux to seek appropriate treatment since bruxism causes or worsens numerous oral health concerns including dental wear, chips, cracks, damaged restorations, and TMJ disorder. If you experience day or night time bruxism, don’t hesitate to contact your South Shore Dental Care team for treatment recommendations.

Dental Implants Massapequa Residents Rely On – South Shore Dental Care

September 4, 2015

Woman smiling with beautiful teeth thanks to the dental implants massapequa lovesDid you know that even one missing tooth can change your face? Over time, the jawbone and gum tissue that support and shape facial features deteriorate creating wrinkles, indentations, and sagging. Even patients who wear traditional dentures experience these changes because the root of the tooth actually stimulates the retention of gum tissue and bone density. Traditional tooth replacement options only restore the visible parts of teeth, but dental implants replace the entire tooth from the roots up. That means patients are better able to retain gum tissue and bone density, and maintain their youthful appearance. At South Shore Dental Care, we offer the dental implants Massapequa residents prefer. Our skilled dentists, friendly team, and patient-centered care make us the ideal dental implant dentist for all of Long Island. Call to schedule a dental implant evaluation today.

Root Canals Can Save Your Teeth

December 27, 2013

shutterstock_160305989Regardless of what you may have heard, root canals get rid of your pain; they do not cause pain. An infected tooth not only causes an immense amount of pain, but can be more of an expensive investment down the road if nothing is done. At South Shore Dental Care, we want to make sure we take care of all of your dental needs, and our very experienced doctors are able help you along that journey!

Having a root canal done not only helps in getting rid of your pain, but it also benefits your teeth. A root canal is performed when there is an infected or decayed tooth, and the decomposition has to be removed before it gets any worse. The doctors commence your root canal by accessing the infected tooth, and removing the pulp. When the tooth is infected, it also infects the pulp of the tooth, causing it to exacerbate. Once the pulp of the tooth is removed, our doctors will fill the tooth with a tooth-colored filling, and top it with a crown to prevent any further corruption. In the end, you’re left feeling refreshed and in better oral health!

When you leave your teeth infected, not only can your mouth get worse, but it can affect you in other areas of your body. By delaying getting a root canal, the bacteria infecting your teeth can enter your blood stream, possibly causing destruction to the rest of your body. It’s better to take care of your oral issues sooner rather than later or it may get worse! If you’re wondering how our team can help you by performing a root canal, contact our office and make an appointment!

What are Dental Implants?

March 6, 2013

If you’re missing a tooth, the health of your smile is at risk until it is repaired. Once you lose a tooth, your risk for losing more teeth increases. Also, your remaining teeth can shift around into the empty space and result in a misaligned bite, and risk losing part of your jaw bone. Dental implants from South Shore Dental Care are a great way to help restore a missing tooth and prevent negative consequences to your smile.

When you have a dental implant, a titanium post will be inserted into your jaw to create the base for your implant. The post will bond with your jaw bone over time, mimicking the root of a natural tooth. A crown will be custom made to resemble your natural teeth and placed on top. At our office, we can both place and restore your dental implants, so you don’t have to go to anyone else.

If you take care of your implant just as you would your natural teeth, with proper brushing, flossing and dental visits, it can last you a long time. We want all our patients to have beautiful, healthy smiles, and dental implants is a great way to do so. If you’re interested or want to know more, call us to schedule your consultation.
